Our legal aid team serves to support migrants in legal or criminal matters where language barriers and a lack of knowledge of their rights leaves migrants highly vulnerable and without protection. The legal aid team provides translation services, documents rights abuses, visits prisons (where some migrants have been held for several months without trial), assists with work permit applications, and monitors legal proceedings either where the migrant is the victim or the accused. Migrants are often subject to exploitation by their employers, in many cases their pay is withheld. Female migrants are also vulnerable to sexual exploitation, rape or domestic violence. The organization carries our rights training (migrant rights, labour rights, women’s & children’s) in the community so that migrants know when their rights have been abused, and what to do about it.
