FED currently operates 2 nurseries for children up to 5 years old. Here the children can play and learn essential socializing skills in a safe and clean environment, under the constant supervision of qualified staff who have been trained in Child rights and child protection.
Without our nursery facilities parents must care for their children whilst they work. This exposes young and vulnerable children to serious harm as worksites such as construction sites or rubber plantations are a constant source of danger. By providing a safe space for their children, parents are able to work worry-free and undistracted knowing that their children are being supervised. Furthermore, the nursery project prepares the young children for entering more formal education at our learning centers or in Burma.
The nursery children are taught the Thai, Burmese and English alphabets and are involved in activities designed to stimulate the development of the children’s mental and social capacities. The children also grow accustomed to discipline and institutional education. We have found that many of the young children who join our LCs without any previous schooling experience are more difficult to control and as such are more disruptive due to the fact they are unused to being in such an environment.
