Labor minister Nai Chaloichai recently talked to the chief of the labor employment department, Nai Sonchai Sonhlak. They discussed some problems facing the department. There are significantly more illegal employees in Thailand than legally registered employees. Therefore, work should be done to reduce illegal employment as much as possible.
The minister said, "National identity cards should be made for those who don't have them and they should register legally as employees. I will present and implement this plan at the cabinet meeting next month. Those who have not given due consideration to the different problems faced, will be made aware. Those civil servants who benefit from illegal migrant workers will be given effective punishment.”
Nai Sonchai Sonhlak, chief of the labor employment department, remarked that, "In the upcoming 2011 budget year, the 700 million baht that has been approved by the government will cover government department expenses but not activities that would be systematic and progressive."
Issues of Burmese migrant workers’ legal settlement and working permission have already been discussed with Burmese government officials and will soon be discussed with Lao and Cambodian governments.
The Thai “Daily News” newspaper reported that the government is also taking action to ensure that those companies making temporary passports will not be affected. |
