TV donation to women ward in prison PDF Print E-mail

Foundation for Education and Development (FED) donated personal hygiene items, cane-balls, dry food and a 29" LG TV to the women's ward in Takuapa prison, Phang Nga province in southern Thailand.

The donation was given to honor the birthday of her majesty the Queen; according to Mrs. Po Po, the deputy director of FED.

"Tomorrow is her majesty the Queen's birthday. Thai people are being allowed to visit with their relatives in prison freely but, Burmese migrant workers were not granted this opportunity. So we are visiting on behalf of their family members and are giving encouragement to the Burmese prisoners. The local authorities were understanding and allowed us to meet with the prisoners so that we can speak with their family members. We were given the opportunity to report the experiences that the prisoners have gone through and this has been really helpful for Burmese prisoners. We are very thankful for having had a chance to look after our citizens" she said.

This is the second time that FED has given a TV donation. Last year a TV was donated to the men’s ward in the same prison.

Depending on the prison authorities, FED is given the chance every month or 2 months to meet with Burmese prisoners and donate dry food, medicines and personal hygiene items. The executive director Mr. Htoo Chit and staff also went and donated food and other things last month.

The prisoners are enjoying their opportunity to play sports in their free time. They also take pleasure in reading, writing and having clean and fresh food as well as medical care in the prison.

According to the record, there were over 40 Burmese prisoners last month and over 30 this month. Among them, only one is female.

The crimes that the Burmese prisoners have committed include: illegal border crossing, illegal logging, murdering and drugs.
