A workshop with the title of “How to manage natural disasters” was held at Sam Sung Community Center, Bang Nieng village, Takuapa Township, Phang Nga District, Southern Thailand on the 14th of February, 2010. The main focus of the workshop was discussions on how to prepare for a potential tsunami.
One Thai delegate from the environmental team and 4 Thai delegates from the rescue team lead the workshop discussions which were attended by Myanmar migrant workers from places that may be affected by a tsunami and Thai people. The total number attending was approximately 60 people.
Mr. Kyaw Lin Oo, Field educator of FED(Foundaton for Education and Development) based in Phang Nga, Southern Thailand said, ”Our goal in this workshop is to enable us to forcast when another tsunami might occur again in the foreseeable future. That way, we can prepare and limit the death rate and property damage better than in the past. Nowadays the world is facing many disasters like the earthquake that Haiti faced last week.”
Nang Wan Chai, in charge of the Thai rescue team from Namahkin Village, said, ”It is very good doing activities like this workshop. When we handle disasters in reality, we have a good relationship and trust from Thai people because of these workshops. This workshop is without discrimination between people from Myanmar and Thailand.”
The tsunami of 24th December 2004 killed 5395 people; injured 8457 and 1762 were lost along the coast of Southern Thailand including Myanmar migrant workers. |
