Dear Friends,

GHRE would like to extend our deepest thanks to all of you for your donations in our Global Giving Challenge. Thanks to your support we have achieved our goal and as a result are now a permanent organization on the Global Giving website. This position on the website provides us with worldwide recognition and support.

We thank you for taking the time, especially during this hectic time of year, to reach out to those less fortunate than yourselves. As the years following the tsunami increase, donors from the area have withdrawn their funds and support of GHRE. However, there is still a huge need for the Burmese migrant population in Phang Nga province- most especially the children.

By supporting GHRE, you have directly helped provide education and health care for hundreds of children in Phang Nga province. GHRE is dedicated to improving the wellbeing of the children and providing them with the tools for a successful and happy future. Without your financial support, we would not be able to accomplish these goals.

Again, thank you for giving a gift this year that can not be found in any store or under any tree; the gift of an education, of healthcare and a hope for the future. You have made an impact which will not be forgotten. From all of us here at GHRE- thank you and happy holidays!

With all our thanks,

GHRE

My six months with GHRE was without a doubt, one of the most meaningful periods of my life. The places I saw, the things I learned, the food I experienced, the engaging work, and most of all the people will all forever be etched in my mind.

In search for internship and volunteers opportunities, I stumbled upon the Grassroots Human Rights Education and Development website and was instantly sold! As I read through the GHRE programs and areas of engagement, I decided then and there that I needed to somehow be a part of this important work.

Volunteered at GHRE From: Jan 2006 Until: Feb 2007

Volunteer comments:     I worked on some Natural History projects with the children and it was great to teach them things about the wildlife around them.  I also worked with a team of volunteers to provide playground swings and climbing frames.  It was pure joy to see the smiles these simple structures brought to their faces and know they will get endless hours of joy.  It was a real pleasure to work amongst them and I came away humbled by their zest for life.

Volunteer comments: ……Few volunteer assignments can possibly be as rewarding as working with the extraordinary Executive Director and staff of GHRE. From the moment we arrived, we felt welcomed, appreciated and collegial. I wrote proposals, web materials, letters, and worked with staff and interns on personal essays, writing skills and progress reports to funders. Seeing the many programs, meeting and socializing with teachers and doing a little teaching with older students was great fun. People isolated in rural areas especially appreciate volunteers showing up, caring, eating with them, chatting, where possible, and enjoying time together. While the lasting impact of any single volunteer may be minimal, the experience has lasting effects on the volunteer and creates life-long memories of gratitude and affection for the people of GHRE in their struggle for dignity and human rights as well as their agonizing hopes to return to their homeland and their families in Burma when the military junta is out of power and democracy is restored to the birthplace they so sincerely long for.
