Foundation for Education and Development (formerly Grassroots HRE) is working to promote education, human rights, and the development of safe, working environment for Burmese migrants and their families in Thailand. Our programs are currently focused on Burmese migrants in Phang Nga, South Thailand and Mae Sot. We are working with other regional and international organizations to achieve our goals.

Mission Statement The primary goal is to provide safe and productive environment for Burmese migrant workers in southern Thailand. Three specific objectives are 1) to provide education to children of Burmese migrant workers in Takua Pa District of Phang Nga Province; 2) to promote job opportunities and foster a safe and lawful environment for Burmese migrant workers in Phang Nga Province; 3) to bridge Thai and Burmese communities.
Who We Are? Our name says it all—we are a grassroots committee of Burmese teachers, democratic activists, social workers, health workers and migrant workers. We are promoting human rights among our people. But, we are not politically motivated: we are not affiliated with any political party or organization. Who We are Working for We are working for Burmese migrant workers and their children in southern Thailand. Since the late 1980s, when civil strife in Burma sent thousands across the Thai border in search of safety and economic opportunity, Burmese migrant workers have experienced marginalization and impoverished living conditions. Employed on rubber plantations, in the fishing industry and in menial positions usually rejected by Thai workers, they are without rights, opportunities or access to a better life. Here, living and working conditions are harsh, wages are meagre, local health care is denied, and integration into Thai society is rare. But these people are not forgotten. Whether dreaming of returning to their Burmese homeland or rebuilding their lives permanently in Thailand, they seek education for their children as a way out of poverty and into opportunity.
